FOR VISITORS:

  • When you book your pre or post night hotel, ask about their environmental policies and practices. Choose lodging in a hotel that is committed to the green movement.
  • Travel light. Extra luggage means extra airplane fuel. Choose organic clothing. Be sure to be aware of local conventions and dress accordingly. Respect places where modest dress is required.
  • Enrich your experience while supporting the local economy. Hire local guides or ask tour operators to use local guides.

  • Save trees. Go paperless by downloading tickets, maps, travel guides, boarding passes to a handheld device. Consider podcasted tours and itineraries. Try to get rid of excess packaging before you go.
  • Reuse towels and sheets. Many hotels already make this suggestion to their guests. Use only the towels that you need and then hang them to dry. If you request to not have your sheets changed daily, you can help save up to 30 gallons of water.
  • Respect the natural environment. Follow designated trails and don't disturb the natural habitat. Never buy crafts made from endangered species.

ALASKA ADVENTURE UNLIMITED
GOES GREEN

How Alaska Goes Green

Our mission is to offer eco-friendly adventures that preserve plants, animals and natural communities in our great state of Alaska. We are working hard to improve our Alaska adventures, find new innovative ways to conserve in our chalets and continue to share our vision with our guests to decrease global warming as well as protect the local lands and waters.

  • Environmental Impact:  AAU keeps trips small to limit the impact on local villages, protecting the integrity of the places we visit. We work with outfitters who limit their impact on the environment such as hiking, rafting etc.
  • Visitor Conservation: AAU shares with it's visitng guests our desires for environmental and cultural sensitivity. We help our guests pack out their trash with each trip as well as share with them the fragility of our last frontier.
  • Social Responsibility:  AAU uses locally owned lodges and cabins vs. hotel chains where ever possible. We visit historic places as well as educate our visitors regarding native lifestyles. We ensure as much of the money goes back into the local communities to support the local people. Green travel goes hand-in-hand with fair and decent treatment of local people.
  • Workplace Education:  AAU sends out our invitations to select groups verses mass-mailings to save on paper.  We use a paperless booking and check-in process.  We re-use one-sided paper in fax machines and office files.  Our employees are educated on environmental responsibility in areas of recycling and saving energy.

OUR CHALET LODGING:

  • AAU Chalet Responsibility:  To conserve energy, we use CFL (Florescent) bulbs where possible as well as LED bulbs, low-flow showers and toilets, high-efficiency windows, motion-sensor outdoor lights & black-out shades.  We use reversible fans instead of air-conditioning in the summer and to lower heat costs in winter. We use sodium-free, environmentally safe ice melt in the winter. We provide glass dishes and travel mugs instead of paper or Styrofoam. Indoor and outdoor potted plants help keep the air healthier by using carbon monoxide and giving us back oxygen.
  • Guest Responsibility: We offer “Linen Change Cards” requesting our guests to re-use their linens saving on detergent and water consumption.  We provide and suggest the use of extra blankets so we can keep temperatures coolerindoors. We provide pure mountain well water vs. bottled water for our guests unless requested otherwise. We request our guests to turn off TV & lights upon departure of the chalets.  We request our guests to turn down the thermostat and water heater at home upon departure of their vacation.
  • Environmental Responsibility: Our grounds feature a natural spawning stream for salmon, trout, and dollv varden, local native plants that require less water, organic garden beds with beautiful flowering plants, bird-feeders to maintain the local bird population, and our grounds are kept free of debris to protect the fragile eco-system including our local wildlife.
  • Community Responsibility: We distribute all used household goods and bath amenities to local shelters or charities.

Our philosophy is to change ONE traveler at a time.

“Less energy used means lower emissions of gases linked to global warning.”
